Loving Yusuf : conceptual travels from present to past
Mieke Bal began to muse and write about the story of the alleged seduction of Joseph by Potiphar's wife in the late 1980s. In this book she has recycled and expanded this early material into an argument about how to study cultural material. She juxtaposes retellings of the text - in the Qur'an, the art of Rembrandt, and the prose of Thomas Mann and others - to ask how these different versions complicate her own and others' experience of the story, and how the different truths of these texts in their respective traditions illuminate the process of canonization.
